Last week I made a game time decision to flee Birmingham and spend three days with my sister, who is filming in Mobile, AL. Even though Ireland is only two months away, I couldn’t hold out any longer. Maybe I was jealous of all you kids taking beach trips and vacations, or maybe I was standing on the verge of a nervous breakdown that only comes from having your phone on 24/7 and taking real estate calls from people who have absolutely no business buying a house (If one more person called in hopes that a seller would entertain a “rent to own,” I was going to scream…).
Either way, I needed a break. I needed a chance to step outside of myself and gain some perspective.
Mission accomplished. Not only did I score accommodations that others would dream of, I met some amazing people, rubbed elbows with Nicholas Cage, and frolicked around a city I had never been to before.
What was supposed to have been a modest stay in a quiet room of the newest Bed & Breakfast in Mobile, turned into us getting a newly renovated 3 bed/ 2 bath cottage with fireplaces in every room, 15 ft ceilings, front porch coffee sessions and a tour of the city provided by the B&B managers (Thanks Alan & Matt!).
It was exactly what I needed – A chance to take a step back. To step away from the chaos of work and work-related stress, and to grasp, temporarily, that the meat and potatoes of my life exists outside of work.
There’s something to be said for loving your life and the way you live it. I can honestly say that I’m infatuated with mine. I don’t wish I was someone else or had anything different. I’m here, in every moment, absorbing it all, and loving it.
My camera is on the fritz, but below are a few pics I took with my phone, and some others I managed to drag out of my camera while it was still working. Mobile is fantastic! If you ever go, consider staying at the Fort Conde Inn (and saying hello to Alan, the inn keeper & chef Robbie, who makes amazing omelets!).
*Special thanks to my sister, Zelda, who heard my cry for help last week and made this trip possible. 😉
We went sight-seeing while we were there. If you’ve never been to Mobile, make sure you take a drive down Government St while there. The Antebellum and Victorian homes are amazing! We also visited the USS Alabama and Bellingrath Gardens. Bellingrath is a little out of the way, but absolutely worth it! It’s fantastic!
Happy Independence Day, Everyone! Celebrate it by doing something only those who are free can do, like shooting fireworks, eating a TON and playing freedom-inspired music as loudly as possible!
